“Milwaukee is definitely where I call ‘home’.”
Raised in Mukwonago, lived in Florida, in love with Milwaukee.
You could say that Melissa Thorton is a true Milwaukeean. Her shirts can be seen all over the city, and 9 times out of 10, if you’re wearing one, someone will ask you where you bought it.
Melissa originally came to Milwaukee to study at MIAD, and at that time, the city was not as it is now. As true with many people we’ve encountered, Milwaukee is the kind of place you leave and come to realize you miss dearly.
But what about Milwaukee Home? How did it al come about? A few years ago, she made a one-off Milwaukee Home hoodie for her friend, Scott. He wore it everywhere. People instantly fell in love with it and wanted to know where they could get their own. Soon enough Melissa realized she was on to something. Printing 10 shirts became 20 became 50 became 100. Now, she has her own shop and sells shirts online and throughout the city.
Melissa’s idea is not too far off from our own: “Milwaukee has such a sense of community. This generation in the city wants to create something, and they want to bring the city up right now.” Milwaukee is definitely a city to be proud of. Why not display your pride?
While the community is flourishing, there are still some things that need to be improved. Milwaukee is one of the most diverse cities, but it’s also very apparent that it’s the most segregated. Melissa sees her apparel more than just a statement: “It’s a movement. We can bring this city together.”
Today marks the 1-year anniversary of Milwaukee Home’s store at 159 N. Jackson, and all Melissa can say is thank you. For a brand built completely by the community, she has big plans. Stay in the loop by following her on Instagram, and support a great movement by checking out Milwaukee Home!
